My best friend is on vacation this weekend, so I’m going to need to live vicariously through those of you who can snag some quality time with your BFFs. And if you can’t? At least schedule a phone date. A good phone gab can go a long way.
The coolest thing about best friends is that you can talk to them about anything. And photographer/actress/writer/producer/director and mom Amanda de Cadenet seems to agree. Her new live talk show Undone premiered Thursday on Lifetime, and she promises to share her take on news, pop culture, entertainment and life in general. Amanda’s last Lifetime offering was the 2012 interview show The Conversation, produced with Demi Moore, which she says was her attempt to “capture the essence of women through our universal language of shared experiences and solutions.” Sounds like best friend material to me.
Tag Team a New Activity
Trying something new is more fun with company. This week, I discovered an activity called Stand-Up Paddleboard Yoga and e-mailed a friend to ask her if she’d try it out with me. Shockingly, she said yes, and we made a plan to hit the Potomac River next weekend to try it out. Apparently we have to learn how to stand up on the board first, which is a small detail, plus it occurs to me that we can’t get our phones wet, so the chance of embarrassing photographic evidence surfacing is low, which is a plus. Point is: Whether you’re interested in trying night hiking, a yoga class, a craft project or speed dating, phone a friend and ask her to join in. You’ll most likely have more fun, and will also get moral support (and someone who will make sure you don’t turn the car around half way to the river). Ruts are bad, and a co-pilot can help you bust out of one in half the time.
Have you listened to Ann Friedman, Aminatou Sow and Gina Delvac’s Call Your Girlfriend podcast? I’m going to tell you a secret: I don’t listen to podcasts at all, but I will check out this one, which is pretty much the best review I can give any kind of media offering at this point. To quote the site, it’s “a podcast for long-distance besties everywhere,” created by two best friends who actually do live far from each other. Call Your Girlfriend covers, well, everything. From Obamacare to LeBron to that potato salad Kickstarter, it sounds just like a conversation I’d have with my best friend — if we could actually figure out how to record it as we’ve threatened to do many times. I love that they have a best friend anniversary just like we do — and that we’d probably argue about when it actually is, just like they did.
Apparently, Women Against Feminism is a thing now, which is a little scary. Besides providing a counterpoint in the #womenagainstfeminism stream, what’s a woman for feminism to do? I’m personally planning to pick up a copy of Hillary Clinton’s new book Hard Choices (Amazon.com, $21) as well as a book by the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power, A Problem From Hell: America in the Age of Genocide (Amazon.com,$15). Light summer reads these are not, but I’m in the mood for some words from smart women that may inspire me to do more than tweet snark about why equal voices for women matter. And after I read them? I’m passing them along to a friend — one who is preferably a much younger female.
Because I also like to laugh, so I’ve also put Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls Summer Camp on my agenda this weekend, which is smack dab in the middle of a season of “art as activism,” with online challenges, activities and DIY projects. The two-week camp event happened in Austin in June, but content is available online now for smart girls and women over 21 (their disclaimers are impossible to miss. The Smart Girls Party Kit: Ask Amy News focuses on media bias and accuracy in reporting, and given the news climate lately, it seems like perfect timing for a discussion with a few of your smartest global citizen friends. (Don’t worry, there are snack suggestions along with the smart stuff.) So order a pizza, snag some wine or soda, turn up the included feminist dance party playlist, and you’re set.
Have a beautiful weekend with your friends!
