TueNight 10: Kelly Notaras

Age: 43

Basic bio: Author of The Book You Were Born to Write (Hay House, 2018). Founder of kn literary arts, a virtual editorial studio helping authors write, edit and publish their books.

Beyond the Bio: “I did something kinda crazy last year—after spending my entire adult life in “blue bubbles” like NYC, Boulder and San Francisco, I bought a house in a tiny conservative town full of ranchers and coal miners. I did it for really good reasons: to help co-parent my late partner’s 10-year-old twin boys, and because I could afford to buy here. I renovated the house and painted everything white, including the wood floors. The day the house was finished, I started dating my contractor. The result has been a rich exploration of the very real divide our entire country sits on right now. Somehow we’re making it work but I have shed a lot of tears over how differently two loving and thoughtful people can see the world.”

1. On the nightstand: The best lip balm on the planet, Annemarie Borlind’s For Lips(you’re welcome). Nobody Wants to Read Your Sh*t by Steven Pressfield. White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo. And a heavy brass statue of Hanuman that I keep thinking I should find another place for…?

2. Can’t stop/won’t stop: Ocha & Co. Organic Japanese Sencha, even though I suspect it may be the cause of my heartburn.

3. Jam of the minute: I’m indoctrinating two 10-year-old boys in the cult of Hamilton.

4. Thing I miss: Benjamin, my on-and-off partner of 7 years. He died two years ago and I think of him at every day, at least once per hour.

5. 80s crush: I had a thousand, but Faith-era George Michael immediately springs to mind.

6. Current crush: The contractor who renovated my house last year, who is now my boyfriend. We are so different that he remains a constant mystery to me. Which, as it turns out, is very sexy.

7. Will whine about: Passive aggression. I would prefer you just yell at me, please.

8. Will wine about: I can’t drink a glass of wine without waking up later in the night feeling nauseous. Thanks, 40s.

9. Best thing that happened recently: I made the decision to hire a COO for my company. Oh, the relief of not having to handle operations when you’re a word person!

10. Looking forward to: The end of June, because cherries.
