Why I’ll Always Worship the Sun

El sol. Le soleil. Il Sole. In any language, in any part of the world and regardless of the temperature, I love the sun. I could be in the hottest of deserts (I grew up Arizona) or the coldest of climes (Chicago at 30F has brilliant sunshine), either way, the brightest star in the sky makes me happy like nothing else does. Perhaps it’s a function of genetics or environment, but I feel like everything in life is happier, brighter and infused with more energy when it’s sunny outside. Winter offends me, unless I’m traveling to it as a novelty. One of my favorite days of the year is when we turn our clocks ahead and an extra hour of sunlight appears. (I dread the converse.) France has the right idea — each major French city throws a serious party to celebrate the summer solstice, when it stays light until 10:30pm. Bliss! A well-respected futurist once told me that everything about me indicates a foundational need for the sun. My favorite beverages are sun tea (iced …

Serious About SPF: Expert Tips & Busting Myths

I love the beach but I don’t love UV rays. So I’m always suncreened to the gills. (Photo: Andy Kropa) By now we all should know that the days of tanning oils and silver sun reflectors are dunzo. As good as the warmth may feel on our face, as lovely as it may make our skin look (at first), the fact of the matter is that the sun emits ultraviolet rays that are incredibly harmful to our hides. It wasn’t that long ago that the majority of sun-lovers were blissfully unaware of this. But as science began delivering the unhealthy news, and as the sun-is-bad-for-you stats got worse and worse, so did the myths and misinformation. Which still continue today. “No sunscreen is 100% effective in protecting the skin from the sun’s ultraviolet rays,” says Fayne Frey, a 20-year board certified dermatologist and founder of the resourceful skincare site FryFace.com. “Sunscreen use should be the third line of defense against the sun; the first two being seeking shade and wearing protective clothing when outdoors.” Now if your …

Editor’s Picks: Our Favorite Sunscreens

What lotions are we digging this summer for sun protection? Here are four favorites from the TueNight Crew. “This Water Babies sunscreen stick has been our go-to for the girls (ages 4 and 6) for the past three years. It’s durable and small, I keep it in my purse and the lid doesn’t break or fall off. I also use it myself for my cheekbones, eyebrows and collarbones when I’m too lazy to put anything else on.” – Adrianna Dufay, Product Manager Coppertone Water Babies Sunscreen Stick, $5 * “I just recently started using Supergoop’s sunscreen serum for my face and I really like it. It’s light weight and doesn’t feel too sticky-icky (let’s be honest, sunscreen is sunscreen, no one loves how it feels on their face), and it’s been proving my very fair skin with excellent protection.“ –Susan Linney, Editor-at-Large Supergoop! 30+ City Sunscreen Serum, $42 * “In my advanced age I seem to have acquired crazy sun bumps/ sun poisoning. Yay! So sunscreen has become de rigeur (or, actually, it was like …
