TueNight 10: Deesha Philyaw

Deesha Philyaw, a Pittsburgh-based writer, is the co-author of Co-Parenting 101: Helping Your Kids Thrive in Two Households After DivorceIn addition to her wisdom on parenting, Deesha covers topics on race, gender, and pop culture for places like The New York Times, The Washington Post, EBONY, Essence. She even tackled the dangers of the douche for us. (short answer: don’t do it.) These days, Deesha’s working on a novel about “a restless megachurch pastor’s wife”, as well as a short story collection titled, The Secrets of Church Ladies. In between all that, a day gig in corporate communications and co-parenting teenagers she somehow found time to share her TueNight 10:

1. On the nightstandWe Are Never Meeting in Real Life by my girl Samantha Irby (I just keep re-reading it because it’s so good.). Girls Like Me by Lola StVil. The Education of Margot Sanchez by Lilliam Rivera

2. Can’t stop/won’t stop: Eating at this Caribbean spot for lunch. Ugh. They are taking all my money.

3. Jam of the minute: “Here We Go” by Trina ft. Kelly Rowland. Now you know that she’s the Queen of Miami, and I’m from Jacksonville, so… This song speaks to the wannabe badass in me.

4. Thing I miss: Calling my mom and telling her good news.

5. 80’s crush: Three-way tie: Todd Bridges, LL Cool J and Erik Estrada. Don’t judge.

6. Current crush: Zadie Smith

7. Will whine about: My oldest leaving for college in August

8. Will wine about: Malbec

9. Best thing that happened yesterday: I made peace with someone I needed to make peace with…over lunch at that Caribbean spot.

10. Looking forward to: Being with my fellow Fellows at the Kimbilio African American Fiction retreat in Taos this summer
