TueNight 10: Kelly Hurst
Kelly Hurst is having a midlife crisis so she quit her long career in education as an administrator and started a non-profit to advocate for the Black students she saw marginalized in the system. She’s spent the better part of the last six months creating content for Being Black at School and writing her first memoir about her time working in the school system. - On the nightstand: The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas and The Inquisitor’s Tale Or, The Three Magical Children and Their Holy Dog by Adam Gidwitz (illuminated by Hatem Aly)
- Can’t stop/won’t stop: This grind, yo. I’ve been writing for up to 5 hours a day lately.
- Jam of the minute: A fun little samba that I heard on NPR by Elizeth Cardoso titled “Eu Bebo Sim.”
- Thing I miss: A steady paycheck
- 80’s crush: LL Cool J
- Current crush: Cillian Murphy, especially in Peaky Blinders. My GOODness.
- Will whine about: Institutional racism. All day every day until we eradicate it.
- Will wine about: I’m not much of a drinker if you can believe that!
- Best thing that happened yesterday: My granddaughter, Maggie, took my face in her hands and slobbered all over my cheek. I’m telling myself it was an honest-to-goodness baby kiss but she’s 6 months old so I’m probably fooling myself. But she did laugh uproariously when I belched loudly and that was pretty sweet.
- Looking forward to: Publishing my first book and welcoming granddaughter number two!
