TueNight Live: Photos from RISK

All photos by Neil Kramer For some people, standing up and sharing a personal story feels risky — luckily for the record crowd (almost 120 of you!) at our most recent TueNight event, this was not the case, as 5 women stood up and shared stories of risks taken in their own lives. And we got to hear the good, the bad, the embarrassing, and the lovely. Margit welcomed the crowd to the event, held at the women’s career development and collaboration hub, Luminary. Here she is with Robin Gelfenbein, one of the night’s readers, who offered up a super-special second, bonus story at the end of the night (in which weiners featured prominently — we mean hot dogs!). The event’s speakers shared stories of their own personal risks, involving family (of course), career, identity, taking on new challenges, and sexxxxxxy time… gone wrong. Our theme was “Secret” and we had six readers tell all. As part of the Invisible Dog Art Center’s Open Studios week, we were proud to pack the house with more than 100 “grown-ass women” and feature artwork by many of the ID’s women artists. We turned five, y’all! With nearly 100 of our BFFs in attendance, we celebrated our first TueNight half-decade remembering our favorite pieces from the past and listening to brand new ones. We also noshed on some delicious “pencil” cake, raised $1500 for VoteRunLead and connected with TueNighters old and new. All photos by Simon Courchel. TueNight Live: Photos from “FLASH”

On September 25, TueNight Live steamed things up with our latest issue —  FLASH. Braving the (appropriately named) flash floods outside, we cozied into the couches of Industrious to talk flashbacks, hot flashes, fevers and desert orgies. All photos by Erika Hokanson. Jen reads her story of getting pregnant, going through menopause and learning the ukulele.  We were delighted to witness her first public performance, adapting Peggy Lee’s Fever into a hilarious (and also poignant?) meditation on menopause and aging. TueNight Live: Photos from “90’s Bitch” at The Invisible Dog

Last week, on July 17, TueNight Live rolled back a few decades to celebrate our latest issue —  90’s BITCH. Over 80 people gathered in the beautiful Brooklyn art space The Invisible Dog Art Center to listen to stories from Lunachick Theo Kogan, DJ and modern muse Crystal Durant, artist and author Jenny Laden and TueNight founder Margit Detweiler and a discussion with author Allison Yarrow and her newly released book 90s Bitch: Media, Culture and the Failed Promise of Gender Equality.  On the walls of the space we featured beautiful art by Anne Mourier, Erika Hokanson, Maya Sariahmed, Vanessa Belli, Jenny Laden and Vadis Turner. TueNight Live: Photos from “First Jobs” at The Wing

All photos by Erika Hokanson. We worked Fashion Week, drove a Weinermobile, toured with RuPaul, sold chocolate chip cookies — and got more than we bargained for. These were just a few of the “first jobs” our storytellers shared during our April 24 event, TueNight Live. The evening was a benefit for Higher Heights, a phenomenal organization that works to get more Black women into political life — as candidates and participants. Thanks to generous donations from ticket buyers, those who donated at the event and a matching gift from philanthropist Ruth Ann Harnisch, we raised over $6000! Thank you for that. Last week, on March 6, we returned to the cozy Wren Downstairs (last time we were there was for “Sisters”), to bring our RISE issue to life. We had six phenomenal storytellers — Melanie Dione, Kerika Nalty Fields, Whitney Johnson, Elana Rabinowitz, Abby West and Yng-Ru Chen. Walking into the red room at Spring Place, one of our storytellers, Jenny Douglas squealed, “This place is like a ’70s sunken living room!” Later, she corrected herself and whispered, “No, it’s more as if Hugh Hefner had a vagina. I love it.” Last week, on October 17, we brought TueNight Live and our TRUST issue,  to the seriously swanky Spring Place, where we shared wine, sandwiches, and — of course — stories, in a sort of loungey theater in the square, with a beautiful view of Tribeca. TueNight Live: Glowing on a Brooklyn Rooftop [PHOTOS]

Could there be a more beautiful night? On June 27 we took our latest event, GLOW, to the rooftop of the co-working space and sponsor Industrious Brooklyn. The sky was, indeed, glowing. All photos are by the wonderful Kalya O’Donoghue. Hosts Karen and Margit mingle with friend (and TueNight contributor) Lauren Young. Over 80 people joined us! Our biggest crowd yet.  Margit introduced our esteemed batch of beautiful storytellers. Carolyn Edgar kicked things off with her poignant (and very relatable) essay bemoaning the difficulty of pleasing both her kids and herself at the same time. Amy Silverstein ducked in between TV interviews to read from her moving, beautiful new book The Glory Was I Had Such Friends. We were rapt… Then Alice brought down the house, as she does, with her narration of a very non-romantic night of edible ingestion. We took a pause to eat some of the delicious food provided by Brooklyn locals R & D foods and Alta Calidad. We gave ourselves a little “glow” from BeautyCounter. And of course we drank rosé. Duh. TueNight Live: Photos From “SWAP”

We came, we listened, we drank, we noshed and of course we swapped! Last Tuesday, we huddled at the lovely Collab fabrication, lab and innovation studio, in downtown Manhattan to hear a host of hilarious and moving TueNight tales about life swaps — from changing our age, to career pivots to spiritual transformations. Margit introduced the night of readers, thanked the wonderful Adina Levin for hosting at her space, and gave props to Tattly for providing the evening’s body art. TueNight Live: We Party with Our Sisters [Photos]

Whee —  our seventh TueNight Live event, people! This thing is becoming real, real. Once again we brought our issue to life, this time with the theme, “Sisters,” honoring both our biological sibs as well as the many women with whom we feel so close. We gathered at The Wren Downstairs, a lovely, cozy room below a charming restaurant on Bowery and Great Jones Streets in Manhattan. Tasty cocktails paid homage to some of the badass sister matchups of our era. Margit started us off, talking about the sister-filled Women’s March and what it meant to her — excerpts from her Margit’s Note. Adrianna read a piece from her own sister, Lindsay El Tabsh, about how sisters can help us through even the saddest of days. Penny Wrenn described the joy and heartbreak of being a black woman with a white sister. Then a quick break to eat some delicious empanadas. We came back to nary a dry eye in the house as artist/activist Abby Dobson sang of the unremembered black women lost at the hands of police violence, inspired by AAPF’s #SayHerName campaign. We had to do something. So we decided to host a Pussy Party — an election-prepping, Thursday night edition of our typical TueNight Live events. For this live storytelling evening, where we read many of the stories in this issue, we partnered with Industrious, who hosted us in their lovely Brooklyn second floor cafe. Through ticket and t-shirt sales, and a matching offer from the Harnisch Foundation, we were able to donate $1000 to RAINN and $1000 to Crisis Text Line. Talk TueNight: Been Around the World [Photos]

Sixty+ women joined us last Tuesday night as eight storytellers took us on a round-the-world tour: Singing through Buenos Aires, hitchhiking across Italy, under the Great Barrier reef, returning to Haiti and more. For our fourth live storytelling evening, we partnered with Yahoo Travel who hosted us in their lovely Midtown offices. The event was also a benefit for the wonderful organization Girls Write Now. Here are some of the photos from a raucous, hilarious and moving evening of tales, courage and worldwide jaunts. Margit had a chance to interview Yahoo Travel’s Paula Froelich, and the star of A Broad Abroad, who talked about how “travel is not a luxury anymore, it’s a mandate.” We should all get our of our comfort zone, embrace more life leaps and travel. “If your gut tells you it’ll work, it’ll work!” said Froelich. Talk TueNight: What’s In a Name? [Photos]

Last Tuesday, over 50 people joined us for storytelling and conversation about “Names” — the ones we choose with a purpose and the ones we get by happy accident, the ones that let us know we are loved, and the ones that seem like a bad joke. Held at WeWork Park South, we heard from Penny Wrenn, Siobhan Adcock, Kathleen Warner, Neil Kramer, Naama Bloom, and TueNight’s Margit Detweiler, all read their fabulous posts from that week’s issue. Amy S. Choi and Rebecca Lehrer, co-founders of one of our favorite websites, The Mash-Up Americans, moderated a panel on names, identity and ethnicity with Mash Up contributors Sharda Sekaran and Sy Yang. Mash Up contributor and panelist Sy Yang let us raffle off one of her unbelievably soft and gorgeous baby blankets, which are good enough for adults, and make great shower gifts. Talk TueNight: Dishing on Food, Sex and Being a Grown-Ass Woman [Photos]

Nearly 50 intrepid TueNight fans trekked through blizzard-like conditions (okay, a little snow) last Tuesday night to join us for our very first #TalkTueNight storytelling event. Stacy Morrison, Ashley Ford, Tamar Anitai and Heather Barmore read their fabulous posts from our Desire issue. Our fearless leader, Margit, also interviewed Alex Jamieson, the best-selling author of Women, Food, and Desire. This all went down at 61 Local on Bergen Street in Brooklyn.   Our venue, 61 Local, has amazing food, cheese and we kinda went crazy for the beef jerky.     We mingled with friends old and new before we got started with the readings.     We snuck up on Tamar Anitai prepping for her reading. Hey It’s Our First Birthday Party! PHOTOS

Last Tuesday (of course) we noshed, drank and reveled to celebrate one year of TueNight. And without further ado, here are a few photos…. The event was held at the beautiful Park Avenue South WeWork in New York City, last Tuesday, October 7.
