8 Women Share Their Longstanding Lipstick Shades
Lipstick is the greatest beauty product there is when it comes to color. In an instant, we can add a bright pop of pretty to our entire face, without having to do anything else at all. And the shades we choose say something about us — from bold, blood reds to light purples or pinks, what we wear on our lips most certainly make a statement.
If you’re anything like us here at TueNight, you probably have a “signature shade” — one color that’s been your go-to since your early 20s. Even if that shade is very subtle, perhaps a natural-looking gloss or a lightly tinted stain, it still gives people a peek into your personality.
Of course, there are those moments when it’s fun to mix it up, try something new, pick a color that matches an outfit, for example, or try out one of our favorite brand’s latest limited-edition hues.
But for the most part, we tend to stick with what works, what makes us feel pretty, confident and — most importantly — what makes us feel like ourselves.
So I polled some of our TN peeps (including myself, of course!) to find out what has become their staple lipstick shade.
“I mix Laura Mercier’s Shy Pink Lip Stain with Bobbi Brown’s Pot Rouge for Lips and Cheeks in Blushed Rose. I’ve always loved light, brownish-pink shades, but I’ve been wearing this exact product combo ever since my wedding day.”
“Clinique Different Lipstick in Plum Brandy. I try to always have one in my purse, one at home and one at work.”
“Lipstick is my quintessential beauty pick-me-up. Sometimes that’s all I wear. (On my face, ahem). I generally opt for darker, plum-y lips (like recent fave Marc Jacobs Beauty Lovemarc Lip Gel in Saboteur), but in the last year or so I’ve also fallen in love with Lancôme’s cheery coral-colored Rouge in Love Lipcolor.”
“My current fave is “Delipscious” Tinted Lip Balm by The Body Shop. But it’s been discontinued! Why?!? I have my last silver tube in my purse right now.”
“MAC Lipstick in Diva! I feel diva-licious in this perfect shade of red, which I use to make my mark on everything: cheeks, envelopes and, of course, my lips. Also, I’m friends with a group of Brooklyn-area moms, and on our GNOs, our favorite pastime is to put on red lipstick and take pictures with our puckers.”
Rachel Kramer Bussel
“I wear Bare Escentuals Lipcolor in Black Currant almost exclusively. I discovered it via Sephora trial and error; I like the bold magenta color and the way it feels on my lips. I tend to have a favorite lipstick for a few years, then find a new favorite, so perhaps when this tube runs out it’ll be time to try to find my next must-have.”
“Red lipstick has always taken me to my happy place. Since my young-adult disco days to my grown-up lady moments, I always reach for red for an instant dose of fabulous. My current favorite? NARS Lipstick in Shanghai Express. Pure perfection.”
“Back in my late-‘80s college years, my signature color was red: Shiseido Water in Lip and Paint-on Kabuki Red from Pat Fields. I haven’t worn reds like those until just a few months ago, when Anna Sui gave me two of her new lipsticks, my favorite being #400, Anna Red. There hasn’t been a day now that I haven’t worn it.”

I confess I really miss Revlon’s Zinc Pink from 1986….
Plum by Sugar or Black Honey by Clinique.. similar plummy hue that goes with anything!
Unless I’m going out to an event, my go-to is Burt’s Bees Lip Shimmers in just about every color. I keep them in every purse, my car, my desk, the kitchen. They are stashed everywhere. And the colors vary so I actually never remember what I will find but whatevs.
I agree with Sara! Burt’s Bees Fig is the perfect keep-in-your-coat-pocket lip color.
My current fave — an almost showgirl-red called Everlasting from the Matte Lip Color line by legend Kevyn Aucoin.
Celeste was wearing Everlasting yesterday when I had lunch with her, and I almost stole it. I’m buying it today.
Ruby Woo by MAC. I get compliments every time I put it on – always from other women.
Erin, I love Black Honey! But I am totally stealing Rachel’s shade. I need something new.

[…] Serving size says three will suffice. An episode is 54 minutes, not 324. Really, do I need Saboteur, Tangerine and Riviera […]
